A first appointment usually takes around two hours because every nail is built and filed individually. Acrylic holds sharp architecture especially well — square edges, straight sidewalls, long coffin and stiletto shapes — which is why it remains the classic choice for statement nails. Colour can be gel polish over the top, or built into the acrylic itself as with pink and white or ombre work.

Sets are maintained with fills every two to three weeks rather than being removed each time, so the same structure can run for months with regular upkeep. Removal is by soaking in acetone, which takes longer than gel — often twenty to thirty minutes — and should be done in the salon. Acrylic is a cosmetic enhancement: it changes how your nails look, not how they grow.

After the natural nail is shaped, the cuticle area tidied and the shine lightly buffed away, a dehydrator and primer prepare the surface. A tip is glued on and blended, or a paper form is fitted under the free edge for sculpting. The technician then dips a brush in monomer, picks up powder to form a bead, and places beads to build the free edge, the apex and the area near the cuticle. The product firms up in minutes, after which the set is filed, refined and buffed or top-coated.
