Botulinum toxin is a prescription injectable — a purified protein (type A) that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles. In aesthetics it is used mainly to soften dynamic wrinkles: the lines that appear when you frown, raise the brows, or smile.

In cosmetic use, botulinum toxin type A most often targets dynamic lines in the upper face — the horizontal forehead lines, the frown lines between the brows, and the crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes. Because it relaxes the muscles that create these creases, it suits lines driven by repeated expression rather than by sun damage or volume loss.
It is not a filler and not a resurfacing treatment. It does not add volume, lift sagging skin, or erase deep static lines that remain when the face is fully at rest. Relaxing the jaw muscle to slim a square face (masseter slimming) is a separate contouring use with its own entry; this article focuses on softening wrinkles.
Muscles contract because nerves release a signal called acetylcholine. Botulinum toxin type A temporarily blocks that signal at the treated muscle, so it contracts less and the overlying skin creases less. At the visit, the injector reviews your goals, watches you make expressions to map the target muscles, cleans the skin, and delivers a series of small injections with a fine needle. Most people describe brief pinches or stinging rather than significant pain.
The appointment itself is usually short, and many people return to normal activities the same day, though clinicians often advise staying upright and not rubbing the area for a while. Results are not immediate: movement typically starts to soften within a few days, with the fuller effect emerging over roughly one to two weeks. The relaxed effect is temporary and commonly wears off over about three to four months as muscle activity gradually returns.
A typical candidate is an adult bothered by expression lines that look deeper over time and who wants a subtle, reversible change rather than a permanent one. A good consultation covers which lines actually respond to muscle relaxation, how natural you want to look versus how much movement to keep, which brand or dosing the clinician plans to use, and where the product comes from — it is reasonable to ask to see the registration information for the specific product being injected.
It is not right for everyone. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding are generally advised to wait, and those with certain neuromuscular conditions — such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or ALS — may be unsuitable because they can be more sensitive to the toxin's effects. An active skin infection at the injection site, or a known allergy to a product's ingredients, is also a reason to postpone or avoid treatment. The most common effects are mild and short-lived: small bruises, redness, swelling, or pinpoint bleeding at the injection sites, and sometimes a temporary headache. These usually settle within days. Because the muscle-relaxing effect takes days to appear and then fades over months, the visible outcome and any minor asymmetry can also shift a little during the first two weeks.
Less common problems often relate to where the product spreads or how much is used. A drooping eyelid or brow, uneven expression, dry or watery eyes, or an overly “frozen” look can occur; these are usually temporary and ease as the effect wears off. Rarely, the toxin's effect can spread beyond the treated area — symptoms such as trouble swallowing, breathing, or speaking, widespread muscle weakness, or changes in vision should be treated as a medical emergency. Choosing a licensed medical facility and a qualified, experienced injector, with a properly sourced and registered product, meaningfully lowers these risks.
