Fractional laser is not a single machine but a whole category of medical lasers that share the fractional approach. The most common dividing line within the category is whether tissue is vaporized. Ablative fractional lasers—represented by CO₂ and erbium types—create genuine micro-wounds in the skin, producing more change per session at the cost of a longer recovery. Non-ablative fractional lasers, such as devices working around the 1550 nm and 1927 nm wavelengths, heat columns of tissue without removing the surface, trading a gentler downtime for a plan of several sessions. The typical candidate is an adult troubled by skin quality—visible pores, fine static lines, rough texture, or shallow acne scarring—who can accept the recovery time that comes with the chosen intensity. It is not suitable for everyone. Treatment is generally postponed during pregnancy or when there is an active infection in the area, including a cold-sore flare. A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, a recent tan, current or recent use of isotretinoin or other medicines that affect skin repair, and conditions that impair wound healing should all be raised with the physician, since they can change whether treatment is appropriate, which category is chosen, and how it is dosed. If the main concern is sagging or deep structural folds, other options are usually worth discussing first.
Redness, warmth, swelling, dryness, itching, and fine flaking are expected short-term reactions. After non-ablative treatment they usually settle within days, and most people return to routine quickly; ablative treatment typically involves a week or more of visible healing, and redness can linger for weeks after the crusts separate. Strict sun protection and gentle skincare during recovery are part of the treatment itself—skipping them meaningfully raises the risk of pigmentation problems.
Less common complications include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (a higher risk in deeper skin tones), hypopigmentation, reactivation of cold sores, infection, prolonged redness, and scarring from excessive energy or poor technique.
