A gold facial is a luxury lifestyle-beauty treatment in which gold-containing masks, foils or serums are used within an otherwise standard facial. The appeal is largely the ritual and the finish: a luminous, well-hydrated look and a pampering appointment. Gold is used here as a cosmetic ingredient, and claims that it renews or repairs skin are better read as marketing than as fact.

Overview
Formats differ by salon and product line — 24k leaf pressed onto the face, gold-flecked gels and rubber masks, or serums containing colloidal gold. The surrounding steps are familiar: cleansing, gentle exfoliation, massage, the gold step, then finishing skincare. Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes and sit at the higher end of a menu's pricing, largely because of the presentation.
What people usually report is a bright, luminous look for a day or two and a genuinely relaxing appointment, both of which owe more to hydration, massage and the occlusive mask than to the gold itself. It is a very popular pre-event choice for exactly that reason, and it photographs well.
How it works
The base of the treatment is conventional: cleansing and exfoliation smooth the surface, massage brings warmth and colour to the face, and a mask holds moisture against the skin for the length of the appointment, which is what produces the glow. Gold leaf and gold particles largely stay on the surface and add light-reflecting sparkle while the mask is on. Salons sometimes describe gold as an anti-ageing ingredient; there is no good reason to expect that from a topical cosmetic.
