Laser hair removal is a light-based medical procedure that uses selective photothermolysis to heat pigment in the hair and damage the follicle, reducing unwanted hair over a course of multiple sessions. Its realistic goal is long-term hair reduction—hair that grows back finer and sparser—rather than one-time, absolutely permanent removal.
The procedure targets dark, coarse terminal hair in areas where people want less of it—commonly the underarms, legs, bikini line, upper lip and chin, arms, chest, and back. Because the laser is absorbed by melanin, it works best when the hair is clearly darker than the surrounding skin; white, gray, and very light blond or red hair contains little usable pigment and generally responds poorly.
Laser hair removal can noticeably reduce hair density and thickness and slow regrowth, but it does not guarantee a permanently hair-free area—occasional maintenance sessions are common, and hormone-driven hair growth may return unless the underlying cause is addressed. The principle is selective photothermolysis: a wavelength preferentially absorbed by melanin—commonly around 755 nm (alexandrite), 800–810 nm (diode), or 1064 nm (Nd:YAG)—heats the hair shaft and damages the follicle while cooling protects the surrounding skin. Only follicles in the active growth phase respond well, which is why a full course requires multiple sessions spaced weeks apart. On darker skin, epidermal melanin also absorbs light, so longer wavelengths such as 1064 nm plus effective cooling are usually favored to reduce the risk of surface injury.
Before treatment, the area is typically shaved—plucking or waxing removes the pigment target and should be avoided—and recent tanning is a reason to postpone. During the session everyone wears protective eyewear; each pulse can feel like a rubber-band snap with heat, eased by contact or air cooling. Afterward the skin may look red with small bumps around follicles for hours to days, treated hairs shed gradually over the following weeks, and the visible reduction builds up session by session.
The clearest candidate is an adult with dark, coarse hair on a defined area who wants lasting reduction instead of repeated shaving or waxing. A worthwhile consultation should cover your skin type and hair color, which wavelength and device suit that combination, roughly how many sessions and what interval to expect, how sun exposure will be managed around treatments, and whether unusually rapid or dense hair growth deserves a medical work-up before cosmetic treatment.
It is not appropriate for everyone. Very light, gray, or white hair responds poorly; recently tanned skin, an active infection or a cold-sore flare in the treatment area, and photosensitizing medications are common reasons to postpone or adjust treatment. Tattooed skin within the area is generally avoided, treatment is usually deferred during pregnancy as a precaution, and a history of keloid scarring or pigmentation problems should be raised with the clinician before starting.
Expected short-term reactions include redness, warmth, a sunburn-like sting, and small bumps around the follicles, usually settling within hours to a few days. Strict sun protection before and after each session matters, because tanned or sun-exposed skin is more prone to pigment changes. Treated hairs do not vanish instantly—they shed over the following weeks, and the between-session stubble is part of the normal course.
Less common complications include burns, blistering, crusting, temporary darkening or lightening of the skin—risks that are higher on darker or tanned skin when the wavelength, settings, or cooling are poorly matched—and, rarely, scarring. A small number of people develop paradoxical hypertrichosis, where hair in or near the treated area becomes thicker instead of sparser. Eye injury is possible without proper protection, especially near the brows and eye area.
